The Discovery by the-least The Discovery by the-least
::update:: I have remodelled the Prospero (the merchant vessel in the foreground) and finetuned the starfield to make it less garish.

There's a story to go with this pic, but this isn't the place for it. This is based on a digital painting I did five years ago, but taking advantage of everything I've learnt in the meantime. It has actually turned out looking better than I had imagined, which is rare.

The Process:
Both ships were modelled and textured in 3D using 'Cinema 4D'. The basic shape of the beast was modelled in C4d using Hypernurbs. After rendering I took it into Photoshop where I made some minor cosmetic changes to the ships and proceeded to hand-paint the beast with my tablet so it has that nice, icky texture to it. Starfield, nebula and engine glow all done in PS.

You like?

Very cool looking. I like the contrasts you were able to get.

That...

That's a bloody beautiful ship there. Is this a precursor to the Taratine or the Tempest?

OOoooooooo!!! :eyepopping:
I like it!

This would make a great panel in a graphic comic mag like 'Heavy Metal'.

:hungry: for more...

Funny you should mention that, because there's a story behind this pic which I really *want* to turn into some kind of graphic novel. I'm just having some trouble finding a style which I like, and which doesn't take a week just produce half a page. Static scenes like this are not a problem, but as soon as characters enter the picture it becomes a real mess.

Thanks for the comments, greatly appreciated :)

I would really like to read that graphic novel.

Why the mess with characters?

Do you have the whole story down, dialog and all?

I can hardly wait, and being that your not American, you have a shot of getting it in 'Heavy Metal'.

If there's anything I can do to help, let me know. :)

I'll do a watch on you...

sweet concept and very good detail - there's just one inconsistency here.. you might try a different method of texturing (try a stretched cubic) for the ship on the left as it can stretch as it does here. lighting is excellent! if you continue to work on this piece i'd definitely like to see the update =)

Thanks for the feedback! Yup, I'm actually re-texturing that ship from scratch and I'll be updating this pic when it's done. Might take a while though as it's more complicated than the big ship in the distance.
